He’s not ready. He’s not vocal enough. He’ll have to grow into the roll. These are just a few of the things fans have said about Jamie Benn’s new role with the Dallas Stars as captain. Although heading into only his fifth season in the NHL, it was no surprise that Benn was bestowed the honor from the Stars brass which was vacated back in March when Brenden Morrow was traded to Pittsburgh.
But what is the hockey world saying about the decision to name Benn the 6th captain in Dallas Stars history? Here’s what a few had to say as they took to social media outlets:
Awesome move by the Stars— Brian Sutherby (@BrianSutherby) September 19, 2013
Jamie Benn is a player who seems to be very good at hockey... aw hell, I can't pretend I've seen much of the Stars the last couple years.— Steve Lepore (@stevelepore) September 19, 2013
I think this one sums up a perfect sentiment:
personally, I’d rather my captain be able to play better than he can talk— nerd (@DalSportsGal) September 19, 2013
And of course, from Jamie himself:
Honoured and Excited to be the next Captain of this great Dallas Stars Organization!— Jamie Benn (@jamiebenn14) September 19, 2013
So, as you can see, despite the many folks who feel a more seasoned vet like Stephane Robidas or Ray Whitney would have been a better choice, those who have played the game and most importantly, been around Jamie from the very beginning feel this is the right move for the Stars as they head into the future.
