By all accounts, Friday's bout against the San Antonio Rampage should have been an easy win. At the time, the Stars held first place in the league with 75 points, tied with the Syracuse Crunch. The Rampage had been sitting in last place in the west division with 55 points. As we all know, nothing is guaranteed in this sport and you have to fight for every win.
Friday's game, however, highlighted the lack of fight the Stars currently have now. Even with Dallas picking up most of our best defensemen such as Jordie Benn and Jamie Oleksiak, there should be no excuses. Holding the blue line has become optional. Turnovers are the norm. It seemed as though every time the Stars scored they started to back off and not play as hard. The Rampage took advantage of every opportunity practically handed to them.
With the 12 round shootout loss, Texas lost their first place hold on the league. They have 76 points but division rival Charlotte Checkers are hot on their heels with 75 points. Now that we are entering the home stretch of the season, Texas needs to fix the issues with defense now before the playoffs.
