It has been my long standing opinion that while Wayne Gretzky is credited with bringing hockey to the south when he was dealt to the Los Angeles Kings, it was Mike Modano who cultivated the sport in today's non-traditional markets. America's most prolific scoring NHLer looks to continue to grow the game as Modano will be in Allen at the Allen Community Ice Rink this Saturday to mark the inaugural Dallas Stars Little Rookies program.
The program which is open (and most importantly, free) to children ages 4-8 comprises of 4-30 minute on-ice sessons which focuses on the fundamentals of skating, stick work and most of all teamwork and fun.

FRISCO, Texas - Dallas Stars legend Mike Modano will help launch the inaugural weekend of Dallas Stars Little Rookies, designed by Mike Modano, at Allen Community Ice Rink on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. Modano will be on the ice during the first session of the Little Rookies program at Allen Community Ice Rink to help instruct and encourage first-time hockey players.
"I'm excited to be associated with a program like Little Rookies that continues to help grow youth hockey in North Texas," Modano said. "This program wouldn't have taken off without the support and hard work of all the local area ice rinks which will help facilitate this incredible opportunity for children to learn the basics of hockey without any cost to their families."
Dallas Stars Little Rookies, designed by Mike Modano, is a youth hockey initiative that consists of four 30-minute, Saturday on-ice sessions that provide children the opportunity to learn the basics of hockey. Each participant will be outfitted with all necessary equipment and a souvenir jersey for them to keep. The program was designed with the assistance of hockey icon and Dallas sports legend Mike Modano.
"We are excited to partner with the Dallas Stars and Mike Modano in helping to launch the Little Rookies program," Allen Community Ice Rink supervisor Timmy Vessakosol said. "Mike's influence on youth hockey in the State of Texas has been a huge part of the reason why so many children are playing the sport today."
The program will begin on Saturday, Sept. 28 at all local area ice rinks, allowing parents to choose the rink closest to them, whether it be the Allen Community Ice Rink, Ice at the Parks, ITC, NYTEX, Polar Ice House or one of the Dr Pepper StarCenters in Euless, Farmers Branch, Frisco, Plano and McKinney. Children between the ages of four and eight who have never participated in a skating or hockey program are eligible for the Dallas Stars Little Rookies, designed by Mike Modano.
The program is an initiative of the Dallas Stars Foundation, which focuses its efforts on providing support to the children of the North Texas community. The Dallas Stars Little Rookies, designed by Mike Modano encourages teamwork, physical fitness and education through the sport of hockey as demonstrated by trained instructors at ice facilities across the Metroplex.
