The trade deadline in the NHL has come and gone. So seemingly has the 2012-2013 season for the Dallas Stars. After trading away oft-injured Derek Roy, the under performing Vincour, and the legend that is Jaromir Jagr, the Stars are left with a plethora of youth [sans Ray Whitney], and a TON of defensemen. In fact, Stars practices will begin to resemble more of a day care for 20 something wanna be defensemen than anything else.
The next major personnel changes will come on draft day. The 2013 NHL Draft will take place on Sunday, June 30th at the Prudential Center in NJ. Seven rounds of mostly foreign names that the average American won’t be able to pronounce without phonetic subtitles will shape the landscape of the hockey world’s future. The consensus top 2 picks are Nathan MacKinnon (6’0” 180, C), and Seth Jones (6’3” 205, D).
The Stars will have to make some trades to get into the top 2. But with the number of picks that were acquired at the trade deadline and the elder statesmen in the room that could be used as pieces to a trade [Robidas, Daley, Rome, etc...), there’s HOPE that the Stars could land one of these two kids and make them the cornerstone of the franchise for the next decade.
The immediate future for the Dallas Stars isn’t bright. Let’s be honest. They lack right handed skaters, a 30+ goal scorer, and star power. Jamie Benn could be the answer to some of the scoring issues, but that remains to be seen. Loui is a nice piece. Kari is a stud between the pipes, but for how long? Especially when he’s seeing 40 shots a night. But indulge for one minute and ponder: If the Stars could make a move into the top 2, who would you want to see in the Green and Black? A 6’3” 2-way defenseman? Or an elite scoring center? Which position puts the Stars closer to that elusive cup?
For my money, give me Seth Jones.
Son of former NBA power forward, Popeye Jones, Seth is a beast on the blue line. Jacob Trouba (former 1st round pick and teammate) calls Seth Jones a one man breakout. Jones is a big body at 6’3” and already over 200 lbs. Did I mention he’s a kid? He’s still growing. Think Chris Pronger. And then stop thinking.
This kid is everything the Stars need on the blue line. a powerplay QB, a penalty killer, processes the game at a high level, and can skate with anyone.
Dillon, Jones, Morrow, Connauton. Yes please.
I’m willing to give GM Joe just enough rope to hang himself, or to pull himself out of this mess and right the ship. But let it be known that D-Day is June 30th, 2013 at 2:01pm CST. Just 87 days, 22 hours and 1 minute from now..........
