With their number one draft pick, the Dallas Stars selected Julius Honka, a right-handed defenseman from the Swift Broncos of the Western Hockey League.  Julius played in 62 games in his first year as in a North American system last year where he posted 16 goals and 40 assists.  It is the 2nd defenseman the Stars have selected in 3 seasons at 14th (Jamie Oleksiak in 2011).

Honka's strength brings a much needed boost to Dallas' defensive corps that struggled at times moving the puck out of their own zone, especially with the man advantage.  Julius met with Stars staff during the NHL Combine and he said Dallas expressed an interest in bringing his style of hockey to Dallas.  "Honks," as he was known by in the Finnish league, stated that he and Stars current forward, Cody Eakin, who also played for the Broncos also had the same billet family.

"I think you have to be mentally ready," Honka expressed in regards to his experience from winning gold in the Junior Championships.  Julius stated he wants to play in the NHL as soon as possible and he feels confident with Dallas' trend to bring in younger players will drive him to make that jump even faster.
