As we get closer to the NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia which starts on Friday, June 27th, we here at StarsInsider.com will be providing a brief profile of potential candidates that the Stars could possibly pick in their current position of 14.  Of course, bear in mind that the NHL Combine just completed and when you mix in trades, teams are constantly fielding phone calls and anything is possible.  With that said, previously, we previewed Alex Tuch.  Tonight, we look at center, Jared McCann.

In his 2nd season with Sault Ste. Marie, McCann was nearly a point-a-game center (0.83/gm) who has developed a reputation for being on of the smartest guys on the ice.  One draft publication even described his play as:

Jared displays excellent vision and is particularly so successful because of his very high level of hockey sense. He reads the game at a level higher than most of his peers and it allows him to create, execute and read plays that some players simply cannot.

It has been stated that his speed and wrist shot capabilities are all well above average, which would help the Stars with their issues on the power play.  Head coach, Lindy Ruff often used a 4-forward look on the man advantage and having a sniper with speed on the point could create some issues for opposing penalty killers.  He's a superior back checker which also plays into Ruff's puck possession philosophy.  He's not overwhelming with his size, but don't tell him that as he's fearless when it comes to puck battles in the corner or setting screens on goaltenders.

Having turned 18 just last month, look for McCann to continue to develop in The Soo.  He has helped Team Canada take home the bronze in the U-18 World Championships and gold in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament but even he would say that he has much to learn, in particularly his consistency.

"I've been doing pretty well," McCann said. "I felt like I was a little inconsistent at the start of the season and I've felt that I've been picking it up. It's been coming through well.

"I feel like there's way more I can give. I'm not really satisfied until I'm at the top."

Feast your eyes on these gems and you'll realize, McCann is well on his way to being a top prospect.

Watch him come flying up the center of the ice at the 3:13 mark:
